City Guide for Apartments in Pittsburgh
Be warned: Pittsburgh is one of America’s next up-and-coming cities. Right now, it’s very inexpensive (cheap apartments abound), but that may not be true for much longer since Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a first choice for recent college graduates. Throw in a blossoming dining scene, a rising start-up scene, low unemployment and a booming green economy, and you might as well call Pittsburgh a Renaissance city.

If you are new to the area and unsure of what neighborhoods to look in, you might want to consider printing out a zoomed-in portion of east Pittsburgh and throwing a dart.  There’s a collection of great neighborhoods on this side that are sandwiched between Oakland and Wilkinsburg. If you are looking for apartments for rent or homes for rent within walking distance to lively areas, Friendship is worth considering. Friendship has a very large 25-34 demographic, so it sees many recent graduates and young professionals moving into its many Victorian houses for rent with its beautiful tree-lined streets.

Downtown has made some serious strides in creating a lush new city center for new and old residents wanting to be located right in the middle of everything. New condominiums, luxury apartments, and upscale lofts have seen a surge of development in an effort to create an attractive and wealthier city center surrounded by the high-end boutiques and cultural focal points such as the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts and the local Public Theater. Downtown has received a mixed bag of ratings and reviews. Some say the neighborhood is not quite there to warrant so much attention while others maintain its all about to blow up.

There are many universities within the area, but the most prestigious are University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Each are located on the eastern side. Student housing is plentiful in the surrounding neighborhoods, though if you are on the apartment search for studios or pet-friendly apartments, you may want to try using an apartment finder to find the best options.

In case you didn’t know, this area can be pretty cold during the winter; the record low was recorded at -22 in January of 1994, though the average low during January (the city’s coldest month) is a balmy 28.4. The summers are beautiful and average in the 70s during July, though it’s not unheard of for a 100+ day to roll through every couple of years. If you are looking for an apartment with utilities included or all bills paid to keep your expenses down during the cold winters, your best bet will be to use an apartment guide.
