East Village rocks
Lower East Village is awesome -- cheaper, quieter than Gaslamp while still being extremely walkable and within range of everything good. Stay south of Broadway or even E/F for the nicer parts of town, and west of 11th. There are good places outside that range, but also a lot of low-income housing.

North Park has it all!
The neighborhood is quiet, diverse, and full of charming craftsman style homes. Yet, despite the residential area's modest appeal, North Park is also home to some of the finest bars and restaurants in San Diego. The area is rapidly becoming a hub for slow food, craft beer, and new music. There's always something new brewing in North Park, but my guess is the warm, eclectic atmosphere will never change.

Great place to live if you don't mind the bustle
This is the heart of the downtown scene. It's walking distance to anything you could need, whether it be groceries, shopping, restaurants, bars, or just a quiet park to hang out. the weekends can be a bit noisy, and traffic can get a backed up when big events are in town (eg Comic-Con), but all-in-all, it's invigorating to live where everyone else comes to play!

beautiful homes and feels like a slice of utopia. living near the water gives great views of the San Diego skyline. only negative is average age on the island is probably 70, so it gets quiet here early.

Little Italy
Tons of amazing restaurants in the area. Short walk to Gaslamp but not touristy itself. Right off the 5 makes commuting easy. All Around great place to live.
