City Guide for Apartments in Richmond

It’s the capital of Virginia and was a key city during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Founded in 1742, Richmond has a long and rich history that is still visible today. You can visit St. John’s Church, where the famous words, “give me liberty or give me death,” were uttered by Patrick Henry. You can marvel at the Virginia State Capital designed by Thomas Jefferson. The Richmond Slave Trail is a self-guided walking path that teaches visitors the history of the slave trade in Virginia, and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia just recently reopened in a larger building.

If you’re not so much a history buff, Richmond still offers a variety of things to do and see. Its popular farmers’ markets have been operating since the 1700s, and there are many restaurants and breweries to keep you busy. Outdoorsy people love Richmond for its proximity both to the seashore and the mountains. You can choose to take a day trip either to the Virginia Beach area or west to Shenandoah National Park and adjacent national forest. Both are just less than a two-hour drive. If you’re looking to stay in the city, the parkland by the James River offers miles of walking trails and recreation area.

After a day spent exploring outside, you can visit the River District, arguably the city’s most beautiful neighborhood. Nestled near Downtown along the James River, this quaint area features a scenic canal walk and cruises, historic buildings such as the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, and numerous delicious restaurants. This is also where you’ll find many luxury Richmond apartments.

As Richmond is a bustling capital city, most searching for an apartment will be working or studying in Richmond. The average commute time is about 25 minutes, on par with the national average. If you’re a student, you’ll find some cheap apartments near Virginia Commonwealth University in the downtown area and by the University of Richmond.

If you want a Richmond apartment with a little more peace, you can find some complexes across the river in Woodland Heights. This neighborhood is still close to Downtown but far away enough that you’ll find the peace and quiet of a suburban area.

Don't forget about the Museum District!
For young professionals, the "Fan" seems like the place to be...but don't overlook or underestimate the Museum District! Great restaurants and bars and museums all within walking distance. Walk to the Fan bars and then go home--don't live next to them! The Museum District is somewhat more quiet and family-friendly. Cozy tree-lined streets lead to nearby Carytown and historic Monument Avenue. Would move back there in a heartbeat.
