Brentwood
If you're an east coast transplant and you hate being stuck in traffic then Brentwood is the place for you. Lots of shops and restaurants to walk to. Sleepy and quiet on the weekends- it's the perfect small town in the city.

Wilshire Corridor
Wilshire Corridor is great in terms of being centrally located in the city (near the 405, the 10, Century City, and Beverly Hills). Cons are that there isn't a ton of stuff in walking distance and the residents tend to be older. Most of the buildings are top-notch, full-service, which is hard to find elsewhere in LA.

the walkable LA experience
West Hollywood, or WeHo, provides with a unique opportunity to enjoy the LA city life without driving long distances in order to get to the main point of interest. Cafes, gyms, bars of all (all!) kinds and some of the most amazing restaurants in California (some of them open 24/7!) are all withing walking distance.

Westwood south of Wilshire has lots of little restaurants lining the street.

People try to use Lindbrok and Ashton as way to get around part of Westwood traffic. Be mindful if you live on these roads!

Wilshire Blvd traffic gets really backed up in the afternoon.

The Century City Mall is super nice, and houses a big movie theater. Very convenient shopping space if you live near here.

Santa Monica in WeHo is the home to a lot of nightlife in LA (restaurants, nightclubs), and it's also the most popular place to live for LA's gay community.

Century City is like "new downtown" Lots of tall modern sky scrapers and largely commercial. Not many people "live" here though, so be mindful that at night it's a ghost town.

There is a cluster of bars/lounges here that caters to the 20-something college grad folk (Cabo Cantina, Q's, and Bruhaus)

Mapleton has some of the nicest/largest mansions in LA. The Playboy Mansion is on this street.

The 405/Wilshire intersection is one of the worst bottlenecks of traffic in the city. So be mindful if you're choosing to live on one side of the 405, and work on the other

Most of the year, there's a really popular farmer's market once a week right here.

Tons of people go on a run around the Brentwood Country Club. There's a dirt path that completely circles the course.

There's a 9 hole pitch-and-putt course in Holmby Park, so live near here and bring your wedge over on the weekend.

Westwood Park has tennis and basketball courts, great for weekend workouts.

Westwood has lots of quick/casual food options because it caters to the UCLA community and all the professionals who work on Wilshire Corridor

Brentwood is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Car-Crazy LA. Park your car on Friday and don't have to use it until Monday

There are a bunch of cool stores and restaurants up at Sunset and Barrington (and a Starbucks, Subway, Bakery). Very walkable neighborhood.

The dog park has about 40 public parking spaces, where you can park overnight. So if apartments near here only offer one space, but you need two, I recommend parking here at night.

There's an awesome dog park here, for those of you with canine friends.
